Charlie Gorevin has the wonderful claim to have played in the inaugural Celtic match back in May 1888 which saw Celtic win by 5-2 over Rangers. He played for Celtic in their following match, a 1-0 victory over Dundee Harp in a friendly.

He returned to the first team and played in Celtic’s first competitive match, a 1-1 draw with Abercorn in the Glasgow Exhibition Cup.

It was the start of something special but with respect to Charlie Gorevin & Celtic, the story really ended at this point as he never stayed or was retained with the club once the major competitions begun. Records appear to show that the Abercorn match was his final match with Celtic.

In truth, little really was known about this man. Celtic historians didn’t even strictly know his actual name or who he exactly was for many years. Searches on him led down dark alleys to decipher who the real man was.

After much work carried out by various Celtic historians (using online resources and the Celtic supporting diaspora) it was found that it was Charlie Gorevin who played for both Celtic & Govan Whitefield. He was Irish by birth, lived in Govan, played for Govan Whitefield and was then proven to have moved from Govan to New York where he played GAA as well as association football.

The search for Charlie Gorevin by the Celtic Graves Society involved confirming his identity and then tracking his life story through historical documentation.

The Gorevin family was found to have emigrated from Glasgow to the USA.

Charlie Gorevin passed away prematurely in April 1915 aged 48, following a successful stateside sporting career.

He had the wonderful experience in reflection to play in the inaugural Celtic match against Rangers which Celtic won 5-2 & Celtic’s first match in competition, and so played his small part in the formation of the club.
