Paul Lawson began his career at Celtic where he was captain of the reserves side, and was a regular for the Scotland national under-21 football team. When playing for the national youth team in his preferred position of central midfield, he was often to be found on the substitutes’ bench as his team’s second resort.
His debut for Celtic was v Dunfermline in the league in August 2005 in a 4-0 victory notable for the debut goals by Zurawski & Nakamura. It came a week after a then demoralising 3-1 defeat to Rangers, which wasn’t helping new manager Gordon Strachan who was having a rocky start; only a few weeks beforehand Celtic had been humiliated 4-0 by Artmedia Bratislava in the Champions League qualifiers.
Lawson was awarded few other opportunities, although Celtic were undefeated in his four appearances. His final appearance was in a 2-2 draw in the final league match of the season which was v Aberdeen, whom he had supported as a boy growing up.
Celtic won the league that season (2005-06), and he had played a small part in this success as Celtic regained the league title.
Lawson played at right-back for Celtic in pre-season of 2006-07 against teams such as Manchester United and was in the squad for the first game of the season in the 4-1 defeat of Kilmarnock which put Celtic top of the league but he did not make it onto the field.
Lawson spent the first half of the 2006-07 season on loan at Scottish First Division club St. Johnstone, returning to Parkhead in December 2006. After being an unused substitute in Celtic’s 2–0 defeat of Kilmarnock on 2 January 2007, Lawson completed a second loan move, this time to St. Mirren.
He got to play in the friendly testimonial match for Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, in a 3-2 victory for the magpies, albeit he inadvertently scored an own-goal!
Paul Lawson was released by Celtic in the summer of 2007, and he then signed for Ross County on 31 August for an undisclosed fee in Aug 2007.
In total he played just four games for Celtic’s first team. Sadly didn’t make the breakthrough, we hope him all the best.
After a couple of transitionary and injury-hit years at Ross County, Paul emerged as one of the best players outwith the SPL in 2009/10 helping them to the Scottish Cup final which they duly lost to Dundee Utd 3-0. He later helped Ross County to the 2011-12 Scottish First Division (second tier) title
He had a long career with Ross County, before a short stint with Motherwell, and then stepping down to play in the Highland leagues.
