Midfielder Ryan McCann made just one first team appearance for Celtic after coming through the youth ranks at Parkhead.
He started the end-of-season match with Dundee United in May 2000, when Kenny Dalglish availed himself of the opportunity to blood some youngsters. There were three debutants in the Celtic line-up – James Goodwin, Brian McColligan, and Ryan McCann – and three – John Kennedy, Mark Fotheringham and Simon Lynch, sons of Parkhead 1970s Celtic player Andy Lynch – making their first starts. Only the spine of the team contained regulars of the calibre of Paul Lambert and Johan Mjallby. “Baby-sitters”, Dalglish later called them.
Ryan McCann was close to a goal when Mark Burchill tapped in the ball from a yard after Ryan McCann had seen his angled shot parried by Combe.
That game is best remembered as it was the return for Larsson after being out for most of the season following his leg break, and it was onward and upward for him.
However, it was sadly to be Ryan McCann’s only first team appearance for Celtic, with Celtic to enter a new era of transition with Martin O’Neill arriving at a then club on a low ebb. Martin O’Neill generally concentrated on buying in players in his time than rearing young players, so Ryan McCann and others lost out.
After a successful loan spell at St Johnstone the youngster moved in August 2003 to Hartlepool but the move ultimately didn’t work out and he later returned to St Johnstone before firstly joining Bohemians in Ireland and then in January 2008 Queen of the South. Here he was converted from a midfielder to a right back and helped the lowly Dumfries outfit to an unlikely Scottish Cup Final appearance.
He also hit an astonishing and famous goal against Dundee from well inside his own half of the field. At the end of the 2007/08 season he chose not to take up the offer of a further contract from Queen of the South and moved on to Morecambe where he lasted only six months before reverting to Queen of the South in January 2009.
Signed for Airdrie United in September 2009 after a successful trial, and then Ayr Utd a season later. He later had spells with Stockport County, with UMF Einherji (Iceland) and junior side Pollok.
He hung up his boots quietly in 2016. Much travelled around and gave the game a good go, so much respect to him.
