Having signed for Celtic from Maryhill Hibernian in May 1931, Thomas McGunnigle enjoyed a rather fleeting Parkhead career. Celtic was in the family, being the cousin of the great Peter McGonagle.
His debut and solitary appearance came in a 1-1 league draw with Airdrie on 9th April 1932, taking the place of Charlie Napier who was on international duty. Sadly didn’t get any real mention in the press reports on his performance. On the other hand, Willie McDonald of Airdrie who scored the equaliser v Celtic, impressed English scouts and signed for Manchester Utd later that month.
England beat Scotland 3-0, so maybe Charlie Napier might have wished he’d played for Celtic instead and not gone on international duty.
An outside-right, McGunnigle was understudy to the great Bertie Thomson for his one year at Parkhead.
Tommy McGunnigle couldn’t displace Bertie Thompson, and eventually he left to join Glentoran in October 1932. He later played for Dumbarton, Cork and Brechin City.
