Biog
Outside-left Andrew Miller signed for the Bhoys from Croy Celtic in August 1920, “a product of Newtown Park, Bo’ness“.
Described as “stoutly built, stands well on his legs and has pluck and strength“.
His debut came in a 2-1 league win at Parkhead over Hamilton on 11th September 1920. He went on to score his sole goal in a match v Hibs on 21st April 1921 in a 3-0 victory for Celtic, which was “coolly taken and overall his display pleased the Parkhead critics“.
A strong and stout player Miller was mostly an understudy to the great Adam McLean and in total he played five league games – with one goal – for the Hoops. He had to compete with David Pratt and Jean McFarlane for a place, so strong competition.
In those five league matches for Celtic, he had the great honour of playing in unbeaten sides, with five victories, 13 goals scored and just 5 conceded. He also played in Charlie Shaw’s benefit match on 5 Oct 1920 against a strong Central League XI that included Joe Dodds and Arthur McInally.
He played his last game for Celtic against Third Lanark in the semi-final of the ‘Lord Provost’s Unemployment Tourney‘. We can only now wonder if they’ll ever bring back such a tournament with that title ever again.
He went on to have loan spells with Dumbarton in 1922 & 1923, before moving to Nottingham Forest but returning up north to play for Bo’nesss, Camelon Juniors and Montrose.
