John Potter, Defender, 1996-1999John Potter was a Youth and Reserve team player for Celtic from 1996 to 1999. He never made a representative first team appearance.

Born in Dunfermiline, John Potter was signed to the club after being scouted whilst playing for High Valleyfield Boys Club. He had also played for the Celtic Boys Club and won the Under-15 Boy of the Year Award in 1996. On signing John went straight into the central defender's slot for the youth team. Indeed his progress and ability were so good that he even won Sub appearances for the Reserve side in season 1996-97, his first full season with the club.

He continued this progress through the next season playing predominantly for the Reserves as a 17 year old, still young enough to be called in to the Youth side in their Youth Division and BP Youth Cup games. A great deal was thought of his ability and strength and the feeling from the new Youth Development staff was that he would go 'all the way'. He went with the League winning team at the end of the season on the trip to Lisbon for the Friendly against Sporting Lisbon, making the bench but failing to get on during the game. He also played in the Benefit game away to Ross County in late October which saw the return of Tommy Johnson and Darren Jackson from long term injuries.

In season 1998-99 he was taken with the first team squad on theshort pre-season tour of Holland, coming on as a sub in both games there. He was made captain of the Reserves and played through the season with them without making any further progress towards a first team place. He decided to look for opportunities elsewhere and was released from his contract on 21 June 1999.

After leaving Celtic, John joined Dunfermiline. He made 28 appearances for them scoring one goal before heading off to Clyde in March 2002. He became a regular starter for Clyde and at the start of the 2004-05 season was made club captain. He was out of contract at the end of the season and moved to St Mirren. He continues to play for St Mirren winning promotion to the SPL in his first season with the club. He remains a valued player with the Paisley side becoming club captain at the start of 2008-09 season.
