Biog
Earnock-born Rab Quinn was signed by the Hoops in August 1943 from Blantyre Celtic.
A right-half, Rab Quinn’s competitive debut came in a 4-1 Regional League defeat to Dumbarton at Parkhead on 4th September 1943.
Rab Quinn was a strong and competitive player who loved to test opposition keepers with his long range shooting efforts, however he only actually scored one goal. That solitary goal came in a league game on 23 Aug 1947, in a 3-2 victory over Third Lanark. In retrospect, it was a valuable goal as were all that season as Celtic just staved off relegation.
Disaster had struck when he broke his leg against Clyde after just ten minutes in a match on 24 Aug 1946. He recovered to make a comeback to score two piledriver goals against Clyde in the reserves. However, it was power more than direction that was his forte.
He never established himself at Parkhead, but he would go on to prove to be a more than useful asset to Arbroath whom he joined in December 1947 after 12 league & cup appearances for Celtic with just the one goal.
It must be reminded that he was with Celtic during the wartime period & the aftermath, and Celtic were abject both on and off the pitch in this era, poorly managed at both the board and team level. Celtic were to just survive from a potential relegation in his final season at the club, albeit he left in the middle of that disastrous 1947/48 season. Lucky to be away in a football sense.
He later went on to play for Cowdenbeath, where he was made captain and erstwhile manager, and then at Hamilton Accies where again he was made captain and played against the Scottish Cup holders, Celtic, in the cup tie of 5th March 1955 (Celtic won 2-1). Celtic went on to make the final that season, but lost after a replay to Clyde.
