Buckhaven-born half-back Graham Robertson signed for Celtic in April 1929.
The Wellesley Juniors man was a sought after talent (“reputed to be the finest wing-half in the Kingdom of Fife“) and had trials at various senior clubs before moving to the Bhoys where he made a total of 37 appearances.
His first team debut came on 7th September 1929 at Clyde when Celtic drew 1-1 in a Glasgow Cup tie, taking the place of John Donoghue.
His only goal for the first team came in a 6-1 league win over St Johnstone in Nov 1929, something he likely will have cherished.
Robertson was a sure footed and athletic performer who provided solid service for the Hoops at left-half. A powerful and hard working player he was an asset to the team.
Sadly his career was to be halted by illness. Advised to stop playing football on medical grounds, Robertson was to be released by Celtic in April 1931, a cruel blow for any young aspiring footballer.
He only played briefly at the start of the 1930-31 season, signing off in a 3-1 league win over St Mirren in Oct 1930. Reported to have had a fine sign-off from the First Team, with one report stating for this match that:
“The absence of Wilson and McStay was scarcely felt, so well did Robertson and Geatons play in their places”.
He therefore sadly missed out on playing a part in Celtic’s Scottish Cup triumph that season. Celtic lost the league by just 2pts to Rangers that season, and it is impossible to know what difference Graham Robertson’s absence made. To the point of his final First Team match, Celtic were having an excellent start to the season.
He’d played 37 league & Scottish Cup games for Celtic in the league & Scottish Cup with that solitary goal, and we can only now wonder what he would have gone on to achieve in football if circumstances hadn’t halted his Celtic career.
He did however attempt a comeback later that year with Cowdenbeath.
He is believed to have passed away in 1996 after a long life. [TBC]
