Kirkcaldy-born goalkeeper David Robertson made two appearances for the Bhoys when his fellow Fifer John Thomson was on international duty.
An engineer by trade, Robertson signed for the Bhoys from Rosslyn Juniors in October 1930 and made his debut soon enough in a thrilling 3-3 league draw at Motherwell on October 25th. Motherwell were a strong side having been runners-up to Rangers the year before, and this season ended third just 2pts behind Celtic who finished 2pts behind title winners Rangers.
Despite having conceded three goals in the game v Motherwell, one match report stated:
“Robertson, of Rosslyn Juniors, was very safe in the Parkhead goal”.
He had to wait until 21 Feb 1931 for his next and last appearance, a 3-1 away victory to St Mirren when fellow Kirkcaldy man John Thomson was away playing for Scotland against Ireland. So sadly David Robertson never got to play a competitive match in front of the support at Celtic Park but Celtic were undefeated in his two appearances. He only lost a goal in the second match as a penalty was conceded.
It was clear that David Robertson would never be able to dislodge the magnificent John Thomson and so David Robertson joined Cowdenbeath in June 1931, before a return to Rosslyn Juniors in the same year.
Celtic had a fine side and were close to completing a domestic double in season 1930/31, winning the Scottish Cup but losing the league title by just 2pts to Rangers. David Robertson had helped play his part for Celtic in this fine season.
Tragically, John Thomson died only a few months later in a tragic accident on the field in a Rangers v Celtic match. If David Robertson had remained, he may have been one of those who could have potentially filled in for what would have been a difficult position in the circumstances.
David Robertson passed away in 1981.
