Biog

Andrew Ross was an inside-right who made just one competitive appearance for Celtic.

The Hurlford-born player was signed by Celtic in September 1898 and after playing in some friendly challenge games, Andrew Ross was selected for the league clash at St Bernard’s on October 29th which Celtic won 3-2. He was in the side in place of Johnny Divers.

It was a difficult period with Celtic needing to turn things round in the season. Despite being the league title holders, the Celtic first team had a poor start to the 1898/99 season and were lying in sixth place (as of 31st October 1898), well behind Rangers who had won all their games to date. To worsen the situation, the week before, Celtic had just lost to Rangers in the Glasgow Cup semi-final replay.

However, after Andrew Ross’ debut, Celtic began a winning streak and scored freely till the end of the year, so it likely hampered any further opportunities for Andrew Ross. Celtic actually only lost one competitive game in the major competitions in the rest of that season, a 4-1 defeat to eventual league title winners Rangers.

Andrew Ross was not given any more opportunities in the major competitions, and his last first team match (which was outwith of the major competitions) was on 14th April 1899 in a 10-0 defeat of Dumfries Hibs at Cresswell Park when he scored the fourth goal, the first of the second half in a rout of the Borders side.

Celtic won a friendly the next day v Liverpool and went on to win the Scottish Cup v Rangers, Celtic’s second Scottish Cup success. He didn’t get to play in these matches. As Celtic were playing two friendlies in two days, despite a strong team being played v Dumfries Hibs, then possibly Andrew Ross was only given that chance v Dumfries Hibs in order to be able to rest others. He at least was signing off with a decent victory at Celtic.

He signed for Galston in April 1900.
