Biog

A former Rangers man Hugh Shaw had a very brief spell at Celtic, and made just one league appearance for the Bhoys. He played in league matches for both Rangers & Celtic in the same season.

His time at Rangers was actually similarly very short-lived with just six games played in season 1905/06, but had actually scored a single goal in each of his first three matches for Rangers, so demonstrated some talent.

He’d even scored a goal for Rangers in a 3-2 victory over Celtic in a league match on 21th October 1905.

He wasn’t to realise the importance of that goal, as he signed for Celtic that same season, and in part it led to both teams ending the season joint top of the league with the same points tally. Celtic still won the league title that season via a play-off match for the title, so no long-term damage done.

As for his playing ability, strangely he was once described as having Celtic colleague Alec Bennett’s “pallid intellectuality” and a “mincing, lawn-tennis sort of style“. You can interpret that as you want.

The Uddingston-born outside-right had played his only league game for Celtic in a 3-1 victory over St Mirren at Love Street on 17th February 1906. He was used to less effect here at Love St in place of Alec Bennett (ironically to later move to Rangers).

As Celtic did go on to win the league that season, he could proudly look back at least of having played a small walk on part in that achievement. In the bigger picture, Celtic were in a golden era for the club, going on to win six titles in a row.

He has a curious record of having played with Rangers & Celtic in the same season in their league respective campaigns, but ultimately with Celtic winning the league title. Similarly, future Celt James Young played for both Rangers & Celtic in the same league campaign, but in that one Rangers won the title in 1917/18.

He left Celtic very soon after that sole appearance, and then went on to play later that same year for Kilmarnock and Albion Rovers.

He was said to be an Uddingston cricketer, and maybe that was more his forte.
