Liam Shaw signed with Celtic on a pre contract on 17 February 2021 during the covid lockdown era, a time when Celtic were hitting the bottom of the trough in a dire season. At least he was to start the following season, with major changes expected, including new team management and a new setup in charge of the club (e.g. new chief executive). It was regarded as a bit of a steal for Celtic to get him on his signing.

He had to be patient and finally only won his place in what was the dead rubber match v Real Betis in the Europa league in December 2021. Celtic put out a mostly reserve side admittedly, yet still triumphed 3-2.  Making his debut along with others such as Urhoghide, he had a fine debut to remember with The Scotsman newspaper noting positively:

There were a few bonus performances from Ange Postecoglou’s perspective with right-back Osaze Urhoghide and midfielder Liam Shaw both acquitting themselves creditably as they made their first team debuts“.

Taking in that Real Betis had beaten Barcelona at the weekend just past, it showed the measure of the result despite the overall low value of this fixture.

He was sent on loan to Motherwell and repaid Celtic by helping Motherwell to salvage a 2-2 draw v Sevco at Ibrox in February 2022. This in turn helped Celtic to remain 3pts in front in the league title race. Despite that, he was too often sidelined and sat on the bench for Motherwell which hindered his development.

On his return to Celtic, competition was fierce for places in a rejuvenated double winning Celtic side. The squad was bolstered with a number of players (including the contingent from Japan, Aaron Mooy and others). It was an impossible situation for him to try to break into the Celtic first team when even the more experienced players were having to prove themselves for a place. The added frustration was likely that Celtic were in need of a defensive midfielder for the first team squad, but Liam Shaw was passed over.

In September 2022, he was sent out to lowly Morecambe in the third tier of English football. As a measure of the drop, within the following few days after his departure, Celtic were to play TheRangers in the league and then Real Madrid in the Champions League Group stages (although admittedly he was far away from the first team picture by this point).

Celtic were on a roll with a strengthening squad with even the more experienced players fighting it out for a team place. So Liam Shaw watching from afar knew there was little hope to win a breakthrough back at Celtic. It meant he unfortunately missed out on much of the golden era under Postecoglu, and then under Rodgers.

He was a regular for Morecambe in his season there, but this was followed by another season long loan deal at Wigan, where again he regularly played.

Despite the early positive notes, it was clear that going into his final year of contract at Celtic, that his future was goint to lie elsewhere. Celtic had invested heavily in various players during the summer of 2024, and various others were developing & established in the first team at Celtic, giving Liam Shaw little hope of further opportunities at the club.

He signed on to Fleetwood Town on a one year deal in October 2024.

Despite the inability to win a regular place with Celtic’s first team, he reflected very positively on his time at the club:

“It was the right move for me at that time going to Celtic and it was honestly a privilege to be part of it all. I’ve learned a lot obviously, training with those sorts of players. I’ve picked a lot of stuff up from them to put into my game.”

We wished him the very best.

Quotes

”When I heard Celtic were interested I couldn’t believe it, to be honest. A club of this stature and the number of trophies they have won and they’re one of the biggest clubs in Europe. I couldn’t describe how I was feeling, but it was massive for me and my family to get that kind of recognition and now it’s up to me to start performing on the pitch.”

On signing

New Celtic signing Liam Shaw is relishing the prospect of hearing the roar of the Parkhead crowd.
The 20-year-old midfielder signed a four-year deal from Sheffield Wednesday this summer and began training with his new team-mates at Lennoxtown when they returned for pre-season earlier this month.
Shaw could make his debut for the Hoops against his former club when new boss Ange Postecoglou’s side take on Sheffield Wednesday behind closed doors in Wales next Wednesday.
However, he is looking ahead to the time when he will see and hear supporters in the stands when he runs out at Celtic Park.
He told the club’s official website. “I’m looking forward to playing in front of the Celtic fans.
“That’s what I’m looking forward to most. I’ve heard all about the atmosphere at Celtic Park and hopefully I’ll score a goal and hear that crowd. Playing in that atmosphere will be something I’ll remember forever.
“Walking out and hearing the roar of the crowd will give you a massive adrenaline boost.
“It gives you so much more energy, maybe nervous energy, but good nervous energy.”
Shaw has been impressed by the friendliness and facilities at Lennoxtown.
He said: “It’s been good so far. I’ve been here for a few weeks and I’m enjoying training. I feel settled in where I’m living now so it’s been good.
“I’ve been talking to Scott Robertson and Luca Connell a lot. I’ve known Luca from playing back in England.
“Everyone’s been sound, to be honest. Those two have been really good with me and made me feel very welcome.
“Lennoxtown is really good. There are a lot of quality pitches and everything’s been spot-on.
“I’m quite blown away by how nice it all is. Inside there’s a lot of great equipment to use so we have everything we could possibly need to help us.
“The training’s been tough, especially the first week with all the running. It’s good, though. That’s all in the tank now.
“You get your fitness up and get sharper. I’ve enjoyed the tempo of it and the standard’s been really high in training so I’m feeling ready to go.”

Former Sheffield Wednesday player Liam Shaw joins League One strugglers on loan from Celtic

Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Liam Shaw has joined Morecambe on a season long-loan from Scottish giants Celtic. Shaw, who left Hillsborough last summer to move north of the border, will be looking to get his career back on track at the Mazuma Stadium.

The 21-year-old has failed to make a senior breakthrough under Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou. Sheffield-born Shaw has made one senior appearance and has not featured competitively this term after a frustrating six-month loan stint at Motherwell in the second half of last term.

Morecambe are 23rd in League One after picking up just three points from six matches this season.

A Morecambe club statement read: “Morecambe Football Club is delighted to confirm the season-long loan signing of Celtic defensive midfielder Liam Shaw. The 21-year-old progressed through the Sheffield Wednesday Academy, signing professionally with the Owls in 2018, before earning himself a month-long loan at Chesterfield in November 2019.

“Following his Wednesday debut off the bench against QPR in July 2020, a first start would come 11 days later against Middlesbrough on the final day of the 2019/20 campaign.

“The season after, Shaw became a more established figure in the first team and managed 22 appearances in all competitions for the South Yorkshire outfit, his first professional goal coming in a 2-1 home win over Middlesbrough in December 2020.

“It was during the summer of 2021 that the Sheffield-born man opted to make the move from his boyhood club and join Scottish giants Celtic on a four-year deal.

“The youngster’s debut for the Hoops came in a 3-2 Europa League Group Stage win over Spanish side Real Betis, with Shaw enjoying 65 minutes of gametime on the European stage.

“13 days later and the 6ft 2 man made his Scottish Premier league bow, in a 0-0 draw with St Mirren, before joining Motherwell for the remainder of the 2021/22 season a month later.

“Predominantly a defensive midfielder, Shaw has experience across a number of positions, including centre-back, central midfield and attacking midfield, where he has played a total of 42 professional games, racking up a total of 2,213 minutes of professional football.”

Wednesday go to Morecambe on Tuesday, September 13.

Where did it go wrong for Shaw and Urhoghide at Celtic?

In many situations the phrase misfit is a derogatory term, especially in football.

The game is full of misfits but in the case of Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide it is perfectly apt, virtually nothing in football terms was right about their 2021 moves from Sheffield Wednesday to Celtic. Both players found themselves at the wrong club at the wring time, it happens.

Agents could be partly blamed but with four year contracts on offer on very attractive terms the agents for the two players did exactly what they are employed to do.

With their contracts running down Sheffield Wednesday were in turmoil, playing behind closed doors they were doomed to relegation from the Championship with a depleted playing squad and a 12 point deduction for breaking Financial Fair Play rules.

Offered four year contracts by a club that had won the title nine times in the previous 10 seasons and facing a rebuild with a fair wind either player might have hit it off. Their situation was no worse than that of Tony Ralston who was handed a 12-month ‘Just in case contract’, he took his chance, it never worked out for Shaw or Urhoghide.

Ange Postecoglou took a very unusual squad to Wales for a pre-season training camp, Owen Moffat was the unlikely star, Karamoko Dembele suffered a serious knee injury just when he might have been given his big chance at Celtic.

Early on in his reign the new manager took to Ralston at right-back, ahead of Urhoghide and Lee O’Connor. In midfield Shaw found Callum McGregor, David Turnbull, Nir Bitton, Tom Rogic and Ismaila Soro ahead in the queue, soon to be joined by James McCarthy.

Despite being stretched for resources neither of the signings from Sheffield Wednesday featured in the early competitive matches.

Away to Real Betis in the heat of Seville in September Postecoglou was only able to name nine substitutes while the hosts selected from 12 subs. McCarthy replaced Soro (on a booking) but despite the conditions no other subs were thrown into the match.

The return match against Betis, a dead rubber, saw both players start their only Celtic match, a few weeks later Shaw was a late substitute away to St Mirren and that was that.

In January Shaw went on loan to Motherwell, Urhoghide to Oostende who took him back again last season while Shaw went on loan to Morecambe.

This time Shaw has gone on loan to Wigan while Urhoghide has made the permanent move to Amiens in the French Second Division.

Apart from Jeremie Frimpong and Kris Ajer things haven’t worked out for any of the young prospects recruited in the last decade. Piled up alongside them are Luca Connel, Holmbert Fridjonsson, Jonathan Afolabi, O’Connor and others.

At the same time not much has emerged through from the Celtic Academy since Kieran Tierney’s breakthrough in 2015.

With the first team squad expanding towards 25 or more players the prospects of younger players breaking through becomes more remote although the offer of a Celtic contract is a difficult one to resist.

As Neil Lennon’s last signing Shaw will be the answer to a quiz question while Urhoghide was the first under Postecoglou. Whatever else their career throws up they’ll be able to call themselves Celtic players, with one starting appearance in a European tie against Spanish opponents.

Two years ago they were the focus of interest on Celtic TV, times change quickly in football with targets at Wigan and Amiens now the goals.

Meanwhile Celtic have moved on with two slightly more experienced Korean prospects now signed up, hoping that they can follow in the footsteps of Cha Du-Ri and Ki Sung Yeung with a significant place in Celtic history.

The midfielder joined Celtic on a pre-contract agreement in the summer of 2021.
Liam Shaw insists his decision to join Celtic was the ‘right move’ despite making just two appearances for the Scottish champions during his time in Glasgow.

Joining on a pre-contract agreement from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2021, the 23-year-old brought down the curtain on his stay at Celtic Park at the weekend, agreeing a four year deal with English League Two side Fleetwood Town, who are managed by former Rangers and Scotland midfielder Charlie Adam.

Making his Celtic debut in a Europa League tie against Real Betis shortly after arriving, Shaw spent the majority of his time out on loan to various different clubs. After spells with both Motherwell and Morecambe, he joined Wigan Athletic on a season long-loan last season, before finally departing on a permanent transfer on Saturday.

Despite his lack of game time, Shaw insists insists he benefitted from his time in the east end of Glasgow, as he opened up on his move to Celtic Park.

“I’m getting on a bit now being 23,” said Shaw. “I just need get my head down, play games and get my name back out there. I did play last season, but I feel great and ready to get a full season under my belt.”

“I got the phone call from my agent that Celtic were interested. It was a no brainer. A great experience. The standard of training has improved me. It was a pinch me moment [making his debut]. When I started to play I was like, I’m here now, let’s do it. I thought I did well and we won the game. An experience I’ll hold for the rest of my life.

“I don’t think you can live with regrets. It was the right move for me at that time going to Celtic and it was honestly a privilege to be part of it all. I’ve learned a lot obviously, training with those sorts of players. I’ve picked a lot of stuff up from them to put into my game.”
