Statue unveiled for Celtic great Jock Stein
A statue of Celtic’s legendary manager was unveiled outside the club’s ground.
Celtic’s legendary manager, Jock Stein, has returned to the gates of Celtic Park with a new statue unveiled on Saturday.
The manager of the famous Lisbon Lions squad was immortalised at the club’s gates, with members of the squad among those who gathered for a ceremony before the club’s match against Hamilton.
Stein won 10 Scottish league championships, nine Scottish cups and six Scottish league cups during his career but died of a heart attack in 1985. Plans for the statue were unveiled last year, to mark the 25th anniversary of his death.
The bronze statue, produced by sculptor John McKenna, is based on a 1967 image of Jock stepping off the team bus at Celtic Park on his return from Lisbon, clutching the European Cup. Its granite base includes a famous quote from the former manager: “Football without the fans is nothing.”
Celtic chairman John Reid said: “Jock will undoubtedly be remembered as one of world football’s greatest ever managers – a man of immense stature and someone who gave so much to Celtic, Scotland and the game of football in general.
“As a player, and as a manager, when he lifted a remarkable 25 trophies, Jock Stein did the lot. Of course, to take our great club to the pinnacle of European glory in 1967 is something which will be forever the club’s finest moment, an achievement which will always be Jock’s and always be Celtic’’.
“Already Jock’s great name graces the famous ‘Celtic End’ at Celtic Park, and the board of directors felt it was important that Jock now took his rightful place at the gates.”
Lisbon Lions captain Billy McNeill added: “Jock Stein is a true great within the world of football and it is magnificent that we are now honouring him. I’m sure Jock’s family will be extremely proud.”
