BiogThomas Stewart (@Fulham)

Former Fulham player Thomas Stewart played just one game for an injury hit Celtic, coming on loan from Dumbarton Harp. Tom Stewart had spent two years at Fulham but did not make a name there, playing only around 15 league games in his time from 1912-1914 when war broke out.

Tom Stewart played at right-half for Celtic in a 0-0 league draw at St Mirren on 5th January 1918.

Celtic lost the league that season by just 1pt to Rangers, and effectively ended Celtic’s hegemony through this decade. Celtic had drawn seven games that season, so dropped points as with the St Mirren game were to be costly when tallied to the end of season.

Celtic had actually played in a benefit match (Sunny Jim Young’s testimonial on 3 Jan 1918) that attracted a crowd of 25,000 the previous Thursday, so possibly that was partly responsible for the dropped points in this match. Also Celtic had drawn 0-0 with Rangers on the New Years day game so that can be deemed to be more culpable for the loss of the league title.

However, there were no further first team opportunities for Tom Stewart. He later moved back to Dumbarton Harp and then (ironically) onto St Mirren in August 1918, but returned to Dumbarton Harp very swiftly in December 1918 where he appears to have wrapped up his career.

He passed away after a long life in 1964 back home in Renfrew (Renfrewshire).
