Stein congratulates team following Oct 1965 League Cup final win over Rangers, 2-1. Shortly afterwards, the players did a lap of honour with the cup and the huns fans invaded the field and bowled Hughes & Young over – absolutely disgraceful, utterly shocking. Upshot? Laps of honour banned for the next 15 years, which just happened to coincide with our most successful period ever…players are:Gallacher (behind Stein), McNeill, Young, Clark, Lennox, McBride. This is definitely right, as it was the only time Young & McBride played together in a cup final.
Hughes celebrates scoring the first of two penalties he scored in the match:

“I bet you say that to all the fullbacks you know. The pictures were of great interest to me. The one of me on the goal line and the ball high in the air has a question above it asking if it was my own goal in the cup final. I was actually clearing it off the line, saving a certain goal. My own goal glanced off my head and was going in any way ( thats my story and I’m sticking to it).
Thanks again
Ian [Young]”

A Rangers fan attacks McNeill and Hughes as they parade the trophy. The Celtic players have to fight their way off the park.
