Richie Towell started his career at Crumlin United and in 2007 moved to Celtic.
In November 2010 he made his professional debut coming on as a substitute for Jos Hooiveld in the 57th minute of Celtic’s 2-2 draw against Inverness, he provided an assist for Paddy McCourt for his goal make it 2-0. However, it was a poor match as Celtic let Inverness back into the game with two late goals. A poor result (not by any means Richie Towell’s fault) and likely didn’t help his case.
It was Neil Lennon’s first full season as manager, and he was as much of a rookie in the managerial role as Richie Towell was in his. Celtic were close to the league title but faltered.
Unable to make inroads at Celtic, he moved to Hibs on loan. Richie Towell said in April 2011 that he received abuse from Hearts supporters in Edinburgh derby matches because he was Catholic.
He returned to Celtic, but sadly it wasn’t to be for Richie Towell and in June 2012 he was released from Celtic.
We wished him the best.
Post-Celtic
He moved onto Dundalk and had a successful time there, wining a number of titles including two league titles.
He then moved to Brighton & Hove Albion but played little for them them as they won promotion to the top tier in England. He was sent on loan to Rotherham Utd, and was a regular in his two loan seasons there.
He then moved on to the ambitious Salford City in 2019, who were now owned & managed by the tabloid glamorous set of former Man Utd players (such as Ryan Giggs) and had just won promotion to the English Leagues.
He later moved back to Ireland to play for Shamrock Rovers, helping them to league titles.
