A North Belfast teenager has secured a dream move to Glasgow Celtic.

Francis Turley, 16, has signed a three-year professional deal with the Scottish champions after being on the radar of a number of cross-channel clubs.

Celtic announced the deal for the former Glentoran midfielder on Friday, alongside former West Ham United youngster Justin Osagie.

The Hoops said: “Celtic have today completed the signings of Justin Osagie and Francis Turley, with both players joining the club on three-year contracts.

“Seventeen-year-old Justin, who had previously been a youth with West Ham United, will go into the B team squad, while 16-year-old Francis, whose previous club was Glentoran, will play with the Under-18s.

“Everyone welcomes Justin and Francis to the club and wishes them all the best for the future.”

Turley – a creative midfielder with an eye for a pass – has represented Northern Ireland at Under 17 level and featured in last season’s Victory Shield. He is a product of the Irish FA JD Academy run by Andy Waterworth.

He will go immediately into Celtic’s Under 18 squad this season.

Northern Ireland youngster Francis Turley has made his first senior appearance for Scottish Premiership champions Celtic – and he marked the special occasion with a goal.

The north Belfast teenager came on in the 63rd minute of the Hoops’ pre-season fixture against Queen’s Park at The City Stadium in Glasgow.

Turley then found the net on 72 minutes for Brendan Rodgers’ side as they cruised to a high scoring 6-4 victory.

Former Glentoran midfielder Turley joined Celtic in 2022 when he signed a three-year professional deal.

The 18-year-old could be included in Gareth McAuley’s Northern Ireland Under-19 squad for the European Championship which starts on Monday.

He was part of the Celtic under-18 squad that lifted the Scottish Youth Cup after defeating Rangers at Hampden Park.

Turley was also involved in the B Team set up and is one of several young players aiming to impress Rodgers.

Carnlough man Brendan Rodgers handed Northern Ireland youth international Francis Turley his competitive debut in Celtic’s 3-0 Premiership away win over St. Mirren.

The 18 year-old midfielder replaced Reo Hatate in the 88th minute, showing composure on the ball in the closing stages of the game at St Mirren Park.

In July, Turley played for the senior side for the first time scoring in a friendly against lower league side Queen’s Park.

The north Belfast teenager joined Celtic from Glentoran in 2022. He has represented Northern Ireland at both Under 17 and Under 19 level, but missed last month’s U19 European Championship due to club commitments.

In Paisley, skipper Callum McGregor fired the visitors ahead inside three minutes and Japan’s Hatate added a second in the 33rd minute as Celtic ignored the inclement weather to take control.

Hoops defender Alistair Johnston swept in a third in the 71st minute to complete a convincing victory for the champions who have indicated their intentions early.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have won all four games this season – scoring 12 and conceding just one – and should go into next Sunday’s Old Firm game against Rangers at Parkhead with supreme confidence.

Meanwhile Rodgers expects Matt O’Riley to complete his move from Celtic to Brighton in “the next couple of days.”

The 23-year-old Denmark midfielder is down south undergoing a medical for a transfer reportedly worth £25million to the Hoops.

O’Riley joined Celtic from MK Dons in January 2022 for a reported fee of £1.5m.

Speaking before the William Hill Premiership game against St Mirren in Paisley, Hoops boss Rodgers told BBC Scotland: “He’ll be down in Brighton, completing his medical so we expect that to go through over the course of the next couple of days.

“If a player leaves here, you pay for the player and not necessarily the league. The club have done great in terms of a business perspective, of course.

“From a footballing perspective, you’re always sad to lose a top player. He’s been absolutely magnificent in this last year.

“Pleased for Matt in terms of, he gets a move to the Premier League and for us, we continue to push on and that’s the model of the club.”

Celtic have been linked with 20-year-old Augsburg midfielder Arne Engels.

On possible new recruits, Rodgers said: “Ideal scenario is we wouldn’t be having to do so much business in the last week, however there’s still that time for us to do something and improve the squad.

“Hopefully over the course of this next week, we can get some players in that can give us strength in depth in the squad because after September we’ve got a really long season.”
