Playing Biog
Signed in 1979 after a successful Celtic Boy’s Club career with Bearsden Academy pals Davie Moyes and Mike Doyle. Left after just one season, informing McNeill he saw his future at part-time level.
Joined Forfar Athletic in August 1980, who fixed him up with a sinecure in an estate agency. After a couple of years he switched to an office in Glasgow and eventually became a company bigwig. While juggling his double career he helped Forfar take Rangers to a Cup semi-final replay in April 1982.
After the work-related move to Glasgow Watt spent 82/83 with East Stirlingshire then the next two-and-a-half seasons with Stirling Albion. Moving to Stranraer in January 1986, he made over 100 appearances before dropping into the Junior ranks in 1989.
Spells with Shettleston and Dunipace preceded a move to Maryhill in 1993. Watt reveled in the Junior game, claiming the football was of a higher order than that found in the lower reaches of the SFL. He became manager of Maryhill in 1998, after the incumbent went to Clyde (and took half the team with him).
Coaching Biog
Still working his day job at the property firm, Watt attracted admiring glances for his work at Maryhill and was tempted back to Stranraer as manager in 2003. After signing many of his Maryhill squad – including Andy McCondichie – Watt led Stranraer to two successive promotions on meagre resources. Calling in a favour from old mate Moyes, he even loaned in Everton’s Danny Fox. Watt knocked back the Dundee job in August 2005, but decided to leave Stranraer in 2006 after they were relegated back down from the First Division.
Next he spent six months managing Ayr United from March to October 2007. In summer 2009 he was appointed director of football at Clyde.
