Review
The Scotsman – Monday, 14th September 1891, page 4
The Celtic made their first visit to Paisley for the season, and played off their League fixture with the Abercorn at Underwood Park. It was on the whole a capital game.
The Abercorn made a better display against their more famed opponents than had been anticipated, the more so as the Celts scored two of their goals very luckily in the first four minutes of the game.
Bowie, McLung, Wallace and the two Cuthbertsons did excellent work for the Paisley team.
Kelly of the Celts was in his usual good form, and Dowds was just as good. At back Doyle and Reynolds never made a mistake, but the front rank men did not show their accustomed combination.
The goalkeepers – Tom Duff for the Celts and Andrew Duff for the Abercorn – defended remarkably well.
Fully 6,000 spectators witnessed the match .

Match Report
From a Newspaper Report at the time
The teams met on the grounds of Abercorn at Paisley, in the presence of about 6,000 spectators.
About ten minutes after time the preliminary kick was given by Madden. The Celts lost no time in carrying the ball down towards Duff, of the Abercorn. An attempt was made to keep them back, but the effort was not successful, as about two minutes after the start McMahon had on the first goal for the Celtic.
Two or three minutes later the Celts swarmed in a body at the front of the home team’s goal, and McCallum clinched a second point for his team.
Nothing daunted at these reverses, the Abercorn played up well, and a fine shot from Wallace, of the Abercorn, soon took effect, thus making the first point for his team.
From the centre kick, the Celts bore down on their opponents’ goal, and Duff had to stop some hard shots from Campbell and Madden.
A penalty kick fell to Celtic. Doyle took the kick, but Andrew Duff saved, and put his men well down the field. Both teams were playing hard, but neither could gain an advantage, and the ball was kept travelling from one end of the field to the other at a rapid pace. A few minutes from half time McLaren scored the second for the Abercorn.
The whistle then blew, leaving – Celtic, 3; Abercorn 2.
With the resumption of the second half was witnessed some interchanges on the part of the respective back divisions. Then a long drop from Doyle enabled McMahon and Campbell to put in one of their fine runs. So well was the movement executed, that, had Madden been up, Duff, of the home team, could hardly have saved.
Kelly kept playing the ball well down on the Abercorn defenders, but the two Cuthbertsons, ably supported by Bowie, were successful non-suiting the tricky movements of the Celts’ front-left.
A well judged tackle by Reid let McLaren and Bonnar away. After this the Abercorn forwards made various calls on the defence of Doyle and Reynolds. Nicol and Wallace put in some telling shots, considerably helped by McLung lying well up. To no purpose.
The Celts’ powerful pair of backs were on their merit, and were defending admirably, keeping Duff’s place safe.
From a powerful kick by Reynolds the Celts rushed down in a body on Duff, and McCallum beat him with a low shot for the fourth time.
Play continued fairly well. Fifteen minutes from time Madden added a fifth goal for the Celtic .
The result was – Celtic, 5 goals; Abercorn, 2 goals.
