Played on Celtic Park last night before a very poor attendance. Owing to heavy rain which had fallen during the day the ground was exceedingly heavy.
The Celtic won the toss, and St Mirren kicked off against a stiff breeze. The Celts opened briskly, and after some smart work Patrick had to save some good shots. The St Mirren forwards, fixing on the ball, came away with a rush, but on nearing the Celtic goal Brash slipped and the ball rolled past.
The Celtic still kept at it but could not beat Patrick. Campbell, 10 minutes after the start, sent the ball through, and this was repeated a few minutes later.
The St Mirren forwards were playing well, but were unlucky at goal. The Celtic right wing coming away in fine style, Madden passed to McMahon, who sent in a swift shot, which Patrick failed to catch, thus scoring the third goal for the Celts. The Celts still pressed, but the defence was excellent.
Five minutes from half-time the Saints’ forwards, after passing all opposition, scored their first goal.
At half-time the Celts led by 3 goals to 1.
On resuming the Celts made tracks for goal, but Crawford retaliated. The Celtic forwards were combining well, and in less than five minutes scored a fourth goal. Play became fast, both sides attacking in turn, the Saint’s goal having some very narrow escapes. McMahon, after a fine run, shot, but the ball striking the crossbar, rebounded into play.
The St Mirren now began to waken up a bit, and after some pretty forward play, kept up a perfect siege at the Celtic goal, but Dunbar cleared. The Saints still kept at it, and the Celtic defence were kept busy clearing. A foul against Celtic for tripping was unproductive.
Play again became of a give-and-take order. At length Campbell, fastening on the ball, came away single handed, but failed at goal for want of support. During the closing stages of the game the play was fast and exciting. Cullen especially saving brilliantly. The St Mirren tried hard to score, but it was of no use, as the defence was too good for them.
A good game ended – Celtic, 4 goals; St Mirren, 1 goal.
