ARBROATH DEFENCE HARD PRESSED AT PARKHEAD

Celtic, 5; Arbroath, 1.

Although trying very hard, Arbroath were seldom seen as an attacking force in the Scottish Football League First Division game at Celtic Park, Glasgow, last night, and their defence was gradually overrun by the eager Celtic forwards.

Celtic’s superiority was early evident, although it took them 20 minutes to go ahead, Divers shooting hard past Robertson. The Arbroath goalkeeper had to retire with a badly wrenched shoulder and Adams went into goal. Arbroath struggled gamely on, but within five minutes Carruth and Dawson put them further in arrears with smartly taken goals.

Robertson later resumed at outside right, and took to the position very well, showing a good appreciation of his duties and crossing some fine balls.

Brand netted a smart goal when he beat Doyle in the jump for a Robertson cross and flicked the ball smartly home. Celtic were never far away from Adams, however, and it was only in keeping with the run of play when Carruth and Divers scored before the finish.

Stronger in every department the side were indebted chiefly to the keen tackling and precision of their mid line.

Adams, if unorthodox in his methods, put up a good display after he went into the Arbroath goal, and Becci, Gavin and Brand were best of the others. For Celtic, all did well, with Lyon, Doyle and Divers outstanding.

LAST NIGHT’S GAMES

CELTIC WIN EASILY

CELTIC, 5; ARBROATH, 1

Although it took Celtic twenty-five minutes to open the scoring against Arbroath at Parkhead, Glasgow, last night, they never looked back after their initial success, and won more, easily than the score suggests.

The visitors, while smart enough individually, were never strong enough as a team. Celtic, although including live reserves, played with fine precision and displayed good combination.

Divers opened the scoring after twenty five minutes with a crisp shot from 25-yards which Robertson made no effort to reach. The keeper retired after this goal with a shoulder injury, and Adams took his place. Robertson later resumed at outside right.

Within forty-one minutes Celtic were three up, Carruth and Dawson scoring.

Brand scored a smart goal immediately after the resumption but thereafter the visitors play collapsed completely, and Divers and Carruth scored further goals for the home team.
