Trivia

  • Stevie Chalmers, who had scored a hatrick in the previous game against St Mirren won a call-up to the Scotland side but immediately had to step down when he found himself afflicted by 'flu.
  • There were other walking wounded from the St Mirren game. Alec Byrne and Billy Price had both ended the game limping and Duncan MacKay had had to go off. Added to this was Billy McNeill and Jim Kennedy who were still recovering from injuries. Both Kennedy and McNeill had recovered to take their place. Price's knock was insubstantial. Chalmers was still out with 'flu come Saturday. And Alec Byrne failed to recover sufficiently. In came Bobby Carroll on the right, and debutant Bobby Jeffreys promoted from the reserves on the left.
  • Scotland beat Ireland, managed by ex-Celt Bertie Peacock, 5-1 at Hampden with Pat Crerand playing for Scotland.

Review

This had been thought to be a rout pre-match but as it turned out the Queen of the South defense stood up well to the constant Celtic attacks and the usual profligacy in front of goal. Celtic had scored 13 goals in their previous 2 games but struggled in the first half. Queens were awarded a penalty 2 minutes before the interval when a shot from Murphy was handled by Jim Kennedy. Celtic piled on the pressure in the second half but failed to score.

Some feared that Celtic Park was hexed with only 1 win from 5 wheras the away record was immaculate with 6 wins from 6 games. A win in this game would have seen Celtic move up to second in the League.
