Trivia

  • Worth adding in here, even though this was not an externally competitive match, as it gives a flavour of who was available and considered.
  • In the closed season a number of noteworthy events had occurred. Celtic had applied for and been given permission to extend the amount of seating in the Stand by decreasing the Enclosure area and putting in four rows of benches at the front of the stand. This was said to cost £10,000.
  • The only two players slow to re-sign were Duncan MacKay and Bobby Craig. Both were thus on the transfer list, MacKay at £23,000. MacKay in fact did re-sign and asked to be removed from the transfer list two days later. The case with Bobby Craig was a little more complicated. His wages had been cut during the closed season to £7 per week and he had been given a reduced contract to re-sign. Craig was married with four children and he said he needed more than £7 / week to live on. His dispute with the club was more uncertain.
  • The players were all called to reappear for the new season on 23rd July. Alec Boden and John Higgins were still working as Coaches at Celtic Park, with Sean Fallon as First Team Coach, Bob Rooney as Trainer and Jimmy Gribben as Assistant Trainer
  • On view was newcomer Paddy Turner from Morton and it was the first chance for the supporters to get their sights of the new player to Celtic.
  • Also taking their first steps with the club were new and provisional signings from the Junior ranks.
    • Dennis Connaghan(GK) provisional, Yoker Athletic
    • Eddie Corrigan (IL) provisional, Ashfield
    • Tommy Curley, (OL, OR), Portsmouth (apprentice signing – had signed for Portsmouth straight from school and Celtic took him on when he returned homesick)
    • Tommy Dunne, (IR) provisional, Blantyre Celtic
    • Gerrard Gillan (IR), St Anthony's
    • Billy Green (IR) provisional, Ashfield
    • John Halpin (CH), Our Lady's High School
    • P. McArthur (OR) provisional, Shettleston
    • J. McCallum (CF), Lochgelly
    • Mike McGowan, provisional, St Constantine's
    • Eddie Pearson (WH) Maryhill Harp
    • J . Rankine (CH) Coatbridge St Pat's
    • Tommy Spencer (CF) provisional, Neilston;
  • Ian Leckie, a goalkeeper released at the end of the previous season was about to be signed by Aston Villa.
  • Another open trial was played on the 6th August and it was somewhat shambolic with MacKay, McNeill, Divers, Brogan and Jeffrey absent with niggling injuries and Chalmers and Hughes playing for a Glasgow Select against Manchester Utd. Also missing was new signing, or rather swapping, of Bobby Young who came from St Johnstone with Bobby Craig going the other way. Even so, 33 players managed to get into the game at some point with three periods of 30 minutes being played.

Review
