Trivia

  • There was some more minor fallout after the supporters protest after the League Cup game against Queen of the South at Celtic Park. Most supporters whether they were at the demonstration or not felt justified in their complaints. The newspapers view that Celtic supporters should be grateful for what the club had provided did not really stand up to scrutiny. Investment in the team given the revenue that had accrued to the club since 1957 was poor.
  • Celtic were also in trouble for the contents of a match programme which took shots at the manner of Rangers play in the opening league Cup game and at the referee. The Celtic Supporters Club called for a meting with the directors.Mr Robert Kelly 'was not available for comment'.
  • Another wholesale restructuring of the forward line. Out went Bobby Murdoch and John Hughes and in came a fit John Divers at centre forward and Bobby Young with Turner and Brogan moved over to the right side. John Clark also switched sides with Billy Price back in at left half and John McNamee dropping out.
  • This was a Wednesday night game kicking off at 7:00pm apparently because of a fault in the floodlighting system. The switchgear was the problem and it would take two weeks to fix. This game started ten minutes early and even so was finished in the gathering gloom.

Review

The first half display was as inept as the whole of the League Cup game against the same team. Paddy Turner showed that he was at least a competent footballer by scoring the first goal which was rather fortuitously a deflection of a cross. Generally though the passing was poor. In the second half things kicked more into gear with Bobby Jeffrey scoring a good goal before Steve Chalmers, starting on the left but finishing both goals on the right, scored two goals both with right foot shots from 25 yards. The win was built on solid defense inspired by McNeill who was turning into one of the best, if not THE best centre half in Britain.
