Trivia

  • The draw was made for the semi final of the Scottish Cup. Celtic would face the winners of the East Fife v Kilmarnock replay at Celtic Park.
  • It was all change in the managerial stakes. Dundee appointed the Motherwell manager to take over from Bob Shankly who was moving to Hibs to take over from Jock Stein who was moving to Celtic. Bob Shankly would move to Easter Rd in two weeks freeing Jock Stein to Celtic.
  • Desmond White, director and club secretary, was in the papers with announcements of big plans for the future redevelopment of Celtic Park. The plans involved an outlay of up to £200,000 and would be done in stages. These included:-
    • Wiping out the Jungle and building a new covered stand there,
    • A new stand at the London Rd side of the Ground
    • New Offices, dressing rooms and treatment rooms.
    • Refurbisment of the floodlighting (the floodlights in place were prone to blowing lots of bulbs and were particularly weather prone).
  • First real mention of the Combined Reserves. They played East Fife with a team of David Brown; Billy Kilgannon, Jim Baillie; Craig, Michael McCluskey, Jock McDougall; Curley, Gerry Sweeney, John McCallum, Kenny Aird, Joe Hoey. Tommy Curley had already played his one appearance for the first team. Jim Craig was playing an unaccustomed right half.
  • Yet another unchanged side for Celtic. Celtic again played in the all green strip.

Review

Celtic appeared to have hit a winning formula with this team selection – or the team was invigorated with the prospect of Jock Stein returning. Kilmarnock never found the pace of this game and Celtic could have won by more. John Hughes had an outstanding game right from the first whistle. Bertie Auld again had a lose brief and popped up all over the pitch supporting and playing good balls. Chalmers got the first goal on sixteen minutes of relentless Celtic pressure. The goal itself went in after a deflection off of a Killie player. John Hughes added a second after half time with the Killie players protesting that Hughes had used an arm to control the ball. Kilmarnock then became tetchy and two of their players were booked.

A decent moth for Celtic with two wins in the League and two won Scottish Cup ties. They dropped a place to seventh position
