Trivia
- McMahon received a 21st birthday present when he was included in the team with Chalmers dropping out.
- In the Reserve League Celtic defeated St Johnstone 2-1 at Muirton. Lou Macari scored both Celtic goals. It looked like McBride was back to form again and he looked set to play in the next game in the League Cup against Ayr Utd.
- Jimmy Johnstone sent off in the 36th minute, for the second time in his Celtic career.
- St Johnstone's Kenny Aird had been a reserve at Celtic before being released at the end of the 1964-65 season. St Mirren had picked him up on a free and had then sold him to St Johnstone.
Review
Up until the Johnstone sending off it was pretty much all Celtic with shots raining in from all the players from all directions. None of them though was good enough to beat the St Johnstone keeper. Jinky was sent off in the first half after retaliating when tackled by ex Celt Kenny Aird in the 36th minute. He appeared to strike Aird and walked off with his head bowed. They played the rest of the game with 10 men. McMahon had to go off after the first goal and was replaced by substitute David Cattanach.
Alex MacDonald gave Saints the lead but the ten man Celts came roaring back and Murdoch saved the day with an equaliser with a powerful shot when he pounced on a loose ball in the area.
