- Gemmell, McNeill and Johnstone played for Scotland in the midweek World Cup qualifier in Germany. Scotland lost 3-2 in an ill-tempered game which was badly refereed and were out of the World Cup. Jimmy Johnstone scored and Tommy Gemmell was sent off after deliberately kicking Helmut Haller in retaliation for a bad foul.

Review
John Fallon and Bertie Auld were the Celtic heroes. Auld scored the winner in only two minutes after Harry Hood had headed a John Hughes cross against the bar. Celtic keeper Fallon made some fine saves particularly one from Rooney near the end of the game.
Tommy Gemmell was sensationally dropped for young David Hay because he had been sent off playing for Scotland that midweek. Celtic fans complained that behaviour on international duty should never weaken the Celtic side at any time. Gemmell was incensed and put in a transfer request although he later withdrew it. Things were never the same between Gemmell and Stein at Parkhead after that.
Hughes had a goal disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper and St Johnstone earned a lot of plaudits for their fine performance. Only Fallon's fine goalkeeping kept them at bay on the day.
Despite there being only one goal the final was a fine open game.
