Trivia
- A Wednesday night game against the Second Division leaders arranged at short notice.
- Kenny Dalglish played for the Scotland U-23s on the Tuesday night against a West German Olympic XI at Hampden winning 1-0.
- Murdoch and Johnstone given much needed run outs. Bobby Murdoch was coming back from a succession of injuries which had started with a knee and toe injuries which had proved difficult to fully mend. Jinky was concerned about his lack of form and begged to play. Jimmy Quinn was also coming back from an ankle injury. Neither Jim Craig (leg strain) nor Lou Macari (ankle) were risked or named in the squad.
- The 'Trialist' at outside left could have been one of a number of players that were either on the Groundstaff, signed provisionally or farmed out at the time – the main possibilities being Paul Hendrie (Rob Roy provisional), Chris Strain (Camelon Juniors who had schoolboy international caps and was provisional at 17 y.o.) and Rab Prentice from Newtongrange Star.
This match was played at about the time of the start of the 1972 Coal Miners Strike which would lead to the declaration of a National state of emergency and lead to a three day working week.
Review
Described as a 'mudbath', Jock Stein took the opportunity to check out the up and coming and see the reserves as well as giving returning players the chance to shine. He gave Bobby Murdoch a target of three matches to get himself back into running for the first team.
Cowdenbeath coped better with the conditions than the Celtic players and put the Celtic goal under strong pressure throughout the game.
