Celtic Games 1891 – RentonThe Scotsman – Monday, 7th September 1891, page 4

Celtic v Renton – Played on Parkhead. Renton kicked off with a breeze in their teeth, and almost scored in the first minute. The wind told, however, and Celtic soon had them beyond midfield, and kept them there. During almost the whole of this half the Celts’ shooting was poor, but they succeeded in putting two goals on, after forty minutes had gone. Half-time: – Celtic, two goals, Renton, nil. On resuming the Celtic scored a third goal after three minutes’ play, and, continuing to show better form than in the previous half, hemmed the Renton severely. Renton strove hard to break away, but the defence of Reynolds and Doyle was too good for them. Time after time the Celts should have scored again, but hard luck attended their best efforts, and the game finally ended: – Celtic, three goals; Renton, nil.

Match Report

Played on Celtic Park, Parkhead.

The Celtic won the toss, and the Renton kicked off against the wind, and at the very outset created a pleasant surprise by at once attacking the Celtic goal, Brady and McCall leading the attack. Brady shot for goal, but Duff caught the ball and threw it out. The Renton maintained the ball had gone through, but the referee decided otherwise.
The Celtic soon retaliated with a magnificent run initiated by McCallum, and taken part in by all the forwards. A clinking shot was sent direct into the hands of Lindsay, who was on the alert, and saved easily.
The Celts gradually warmed to their work, and fairly besieged the Renton’s goal, but Lindsay was very sure, and negotiated all the sharp shots sent into him. The Renton defence was being severely tested, for the Celts were keeping up a hot attack. Their half-backs and full-backs, however, were playing a steady determined game, and all the Celtic’s efforts were muffled, until Campbell scored after 25 minutes’ play. Lindsay evidently thought a foul had been given previously, as he made little or no effort to stop the ball.
The Renton’s forwards were playing a spirited, dashing game, and occasionally giving the Celts’ defenders as much work as they could accomplish. Madden, for his first appearance in the centre, was doing very well – he appeared to fall into the work nicely – and he may be kept in that position.
From a corner kick Campbell, with a fast shot, scored the second goal for the Celtic after 30 minutes’ play. Playing with great go, Campbell forced Lindsay to concede a corner. The ball was well placed, but Lindsay saved. Neil McCallum had very hard lines in not scoring with a shot which struck the post and so had McMahon. Lindsay fairly distinguished himself in saving the last shot.
At half time the Celts were leading by two goals to nil.
The Renton had the wind with them in the second half. The Celts began with great dash, and, after some beautiful passing. Campbell scored the third goal, but many thought the ball had not gone through. Then, as the result of some clever manoeuvring by McMahon, a corner was conceded, but the wind carried the ball behind.
Madden was playing a very clever, unselfish game in the centre, passing promptly to the wings. From a foul near the Celts’ goal their supporters for a minute or so were kept in suspense, but at length the ball was got away, only, however, to be returned when the Renton men had very hard lines in nit getting the ball past Duff.
Renton still hovered round the Celt’s goal and got a corner, but could not get the ball through. Some grand passing by Campbell and McMahon was loudly cheered. The ball was taken up close to the goalmouth, but Lindsay smartly saved the parting shot.
The game was most exciting, the Renton playing up much better than one would have anticipated.
Kelly, Doyle, Campbell and McMahon were playing in brilliant style, while in the Renton’s front rank J McCall and Brady were the most prominent.
Time after time the Renton had very hard lines in not scoring. Doyle was playing a very fine game at back – it could not have been excelled – while forward Campbell and McMahon were occasionally putting in one of their smart runs.
All round the Renton lads fairly excelled themselves. They were in capital condition, and never hesitated for a moment. Considering the wind the game was a grand one, and the Renton were not far out of it at the finish.
The result of a grand game, considering the wind, was – Celtic, 3 goals; Renton, 0.
