The Celtic kicked off, and Wilson was at once tried with a sharp shot from the left. The Internationalist made a bad shape at fisting out, but the goal was saved all the same. The vale made one or two good runs, Paton(?) being prominent , but they never really became dangerous.
McCallum and Brady were showing up very prominently on the right wing, the former putting in some clever tricky work just stopped in time.
After 20 minutes' play, Brady scored with a sharp shot close on goal, and McCallum nearly repeated the operation with a very fast shot which was blocked in the mouth of the goal. The Celts were simply playing with the Vale, who, however, were cheered for one or two plucky runs and clever efforts to score, the ball on one occasion being sent right into Dolan's(? probably Duff's?) hands. The Celts had several beautiful runs, passing with machine-like accuracy.
From a free kick the Vale, who were now gradually assuming the aggressive mood, nearly scored – in fact, many thought it had gone through the goal, but it just passed the post.
After twenty-five minutes' play, Madden scored a second goal, but the credit was really due to Brady, who shot beautifully into goal. Wilson just managed to reach the ball and no more, and Madden tipped it through out of the custodian's reach. the Celts were now warming to their work, and fairly running round the Vale, and Wilson had a very anxious time of it. One shot for Brady the Internationalist never saw. It was sent in at a terrific rate and rebounded off the crossbar into play.
At half-time the Celts were leading by 2 goals to nil.
Immediately on the second half starting McMahon headed the ball through. The Vale appealed that the ball had not gone through, but Mr Allison was in a position to see, and at once allowed the goal.
Madden shot the fourth goal for the Celts, the result of some grand dribbling with McMahon, who passed to McCallum, who in turn centred. The Celts were making rings round the Vale, and were amusing the spectators. Doyle and Reynolds had little to do, but they did it with promptitude and dispatch.
Wilson deserves great credit for saving on many a critical occasion. At length, from a smart run down the field, the Celts were taken by surprise, and Cowan scored their first goal by a long shot. as time wore on the Celts relaxed their efforts somewhat, and the Vale were seen to much better advantage, the Celts' goal having some narrow escapes, and the spectators cheered accordingly. The Vale are a youthful lot, and if they can only keep together the form which they showed in the second half of this game augurs well for the future.
After saving innumerable shots, Wilson was at last beaten, the ball going through off Madden's shoulder, and thus the fifth goal was scored.
Madden scored the sixth goal. he had a clear field, and could hardly help sending the ball through.
The Result was – Celtic, 6 goals; Vale, 1 goal.
