Patrick Sheehy, Non-Executive Director, March 1996 – August 2003
Sir Patrick Sheehy was appointed as non-executive Director on the plc Board at the same time as Patrick Quinn in March 1996. He was chairman of both the Audit and Nominations Committees and was also a member of the Remuneration Committee.
He was born in Burma in 1930 to the son of a Scotswoman and an Irish civil servant, Sheehy was brought up during World War II at a Jesuit school in Australia.
A former Irish guard, Sheehy spent most of his working life with cigarette giants British American Tobacco. In 1977 he was tasked with turning around BAT’s Dutch tobacco sales. He did so with gusto, doubling his firm’s market share in under three years. Sheehy rose to chairman of BAT in the 1990s.
He was knighted in 1992 for services to British industry. He has also been honoured with the Brazilian Order of the Southern Cross and the French Legion d’Honneur.
His role at Celtic was largely advisory but his business expertise, influence and contacts in the City were vast and made him an attractive addition to the club Board.
He stepped down from the Board during the 2003-2004 season.
