Following the demise of the Texaco Cup in England, the Anglo-Scottish Cup was introduced. This had a similar format to its predecessor but involved clubs from England and Scotland only.
For the Scottish clubs, 8 teams were drawn in four pairs. They played the First knockout round home and away. The winners of the four ties were then drawn against an English team to play the quarter final again as a two legged affair and the tournament would then progress to a final which was again a two-legged affair.
Over the years English entrants were increasingly drawn from the lower divisions and in 1981 the Scottish clubs withdrew as the public showed little interest in the competition (plus playing some of the lower league sides saw a hell of a lot of trouble at some grounds especially at Burnley).
The competition continued with English clubs only as the Football League Group Cup.
