Biog
A highly rated young prospect Thomas Rogne signed for the Hoops in January 2010 from top Norwegian side Stabæk.
The centre-half moved to Glasgow under freedom of contract and signed a three and a half year deal with the Hoops. He was one of several new faces brought to Parkhead during a busy transfer window for then Bhoys boss Tony Mowbray. A bit of a rough diamond, he bad the basics and it was thought he’d develop into a strong competent central defender.
Despite relatively few senior appearances with Stabæk, Rogne came to Parkhead with a reputation as one of the most promising talents to emerge from Norway in the past decade. With Celtic struggling for form Mowbray was set on making wholesale changes to his team and Rogne was given little time to settle into his new surroundings after landing in Scotland on January 20th.
He would make his Bhoys debut on February 10th, when he came off the bench to replace Glenn Loovens in a 2–0 home league win over Hearts. His first start came ten days later when the Hoops kept another clean sheet with a 1-0 SPL triumph over Dundee United. His fleeting appearances for his new team had been impressive, the young Rogne looking composed and defensively solid. It was no surprise then when he was given the nod for the crucial league clash at Rangers on February 28th.
It was a derby debut to forget though for the Norwegian, who after an impressive opening period pulled his hamstring and had to leave the field as Celtic crashed to a 2-0 defeat. Indeed injury would mean the defender would see little action for the remainder of a crushingly disappointing season for the Celts.
With Neil Lennon now in charge of the Hoops, the 2010/11 season began frustratingly for Rogne, who was again struggling with injury. His first start of the season didn’t arrive until October 30th 2010 when he put in an impressive performance as Celtic won 3-0 at St Johnstone in the SPL. However, the frustration continued as he was ordered off in the very next match for a professional foul in Celtic’s 9-0 drubbing of Aberdeen.
Thomas returned to the side after suspension and scored his first goal for Celtic with a late headed equaliser in the 1-1 home draw with Kilmarnock on December 21st. Now seemingly a key part of Lennon’s defence Rogne started 2011 in style with a commanding display as Celtic beat Rangers 2-0 at Ibrox on January 2nd. A fair run of games then saw him retain a place and win a place in the side for the league cup final v Rangers. Sadly it was a day to forget as Celtic lost 2-1, and Rogne had possibly his worst match for Celtic and was pulled off after just 25mins.
In any case, niggling injuries and the form of Charlie Mulgrew and Daniel Majstorovic would see Rogne spent much of the remainder of the 2010/11 on the periphery of the first team, making only 5 appearances between the start of February and the season’s end. However, he was given a starting slot in the league cup final in the season, a match which was a nadir for him. Strangely, he was far off the pace and so poor that he was substituted off for Glenn Loovens, a match Celtic lost at the end. It was a poor performance for him, yet despite all the difficulties there was still something that many thought he had that the coaches could get out of him, and that he was one for the future.
Finally in season 2011/12 the support saw the better side of him with a greater number of games and performances. Grabbing a late goal against Rangers in a 3-2 defeat was a highlight personally for him, but at least there was progress, and there was confidence in his long-term future.
However, injuries have been a bane for him. In/out the side for games, the joke was that he was too fragile. He’d be in the side for a few games and then bang another injury was to puncture his run. The support hardly saw him for long enough. Some were beginning to bemoan that even in some of his appearances that his development was too slow which saw him at times be a liability especially with his lack of pace and positional awareness. Confidence was ebbing for him from the support, and stories that he was demanding a pay rise were scoffed at by the support.
Problem was that at the end of 2012-13, the club and player were in disagreement, and the stalemate meant that it was the end of the relationship. He left Celtic as a free agent in June 2013 at the end of his contract, an ignominious end.
He had the talent to be a good central defender, but the club couldn’t wait on him repeatedly. For whatever reason, Celtic had a poor record with injury prone defenders (especially the left-backs) and this meant that another one was too much of a risk. With Wilson, Ambrose and Mulgrew ahead in the queue for the positions it was probably best for Rogne to start again elsewhere.
Disappointing as much was expected & forecast for his future and in truth he didn’t let himself down in most of his displays.

His move to Wigan didn’t work out and didn’t win many appearances for the first team, so he moved to IFK Gothenburg where he was a regular for a couple of seasons. He then moved to Poland, Greece and Sweden (Helsingborg).
He married Ada Hegerberg, a highly decorated and heavily praised footballer in the women’s game.

CELTIC Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of highly rated Under-21 Norwegian international Thomas Rogne. The 19-year-old central defender has signed for Celtic on a three-and-a-half-year contract.
Thomas, who has been in training with the Celtic first team, over the past few days, said: “I ‘m absolutely delighted to sign for a club of Celtic’s stature. It really is a dream come true to join such a famous club.
“I’ve already joined training with the first-team for the last few days and I have received a great welcome and have enjoyed very much working with the manager and players at Celtic.
“The Celtic first team is where I want to be and I’ll be doing my very best to try and make an impact and ensure that I can achieve this as soon as possible.”
Celtic manager Tony Mowbray said: “Thomas is a young player we’ve watched for a while and we’re delighted to bring him to the club. He’s only 19 but has had good experience in the Norwegian league.
“We’ve had a chance to have a look at him in recent days at Lennoxtown and he’s shown up well. He has all the physical attributes and personality to be a success at Celtic.
“Thomas has a bright future and will be training with the first-team squad, and competing for a place in the side.
“Like Josh Thompson and Milan Misun, Thomas is a big part of our future plans in defence. We are bringing these talented players to the club in order to ensure the foundations are in place for the coming years.”
