Summary
This unusal post-season tounament was held in the Canadian city of Hamilton in the summer of 1994 and seems to have been part of a Scottish Festival sponsored by Guinness.
Apart from the Hoops, Hearts and Aberdeen also took part in the competition alongside local club Montreal Impact. All the games were played at the Ivor Wynne Stadium on Astroturf. Celtic won their opening encounter against Hearts on May 22nd as both teams struggled to cope in scorching heat, with temperatures close to 100 degrees.
A ferocious drive from substitute Paul Byrne had given Celtic a 75th minute lead but the Edinburgh side responded well and eqalised just four minutes later. Keeper Carl Muggleton was to be the star of the show as he saved two Hearts penalities as the Bhoys progressed to the final after the lottery of a spot-kick shoot out.
In the final Celtic, skippered by Mark McNally, would face Aberdeen who had defeated Montreal Impact 2-0. A crowd of 6,000 – the huge majority supporting the Hoops – turned up to witness Lou Macari’s Bhoys triumph 1-0 in a final again played out in soaring heat. Paul Byrne was again on the scoresheet and his well worked goal after just 14 minutes was enough to seal matters.
One of Celtic’s few bit of silveware during the tumultous transition days following the Celtic Takeover (which had completed only two months prior). It was to be another year before Celtic finally won major silverware, the first since 1989.
