Celtic sent a team to Italy in January of each year to compete in the Viareggio U-20 Tournament. Their first involvement was in 1979 when they went out in the First Round after two draws and a loss. They also went out in 1980 losing to Juventus but drawing 1-1 with Real Madrid.
|In 1988 Celtic were presented with this trophy above to commemorate their participation in the Viareggio Trophy in the summer of 1988.
The prestigious close-season event also attracted newly crowned European Cup winners Porto, European Cup Winners Cup holders Mechelen and Dutch giants Ajax (who Mechelen had defeated in the ECWC final).
Celtic, who had just completed a domestic league and Scottish Cup double, lost their semi-final clash to Porto after conceding a late goal to the Portugese side. They then played Ajax and were beaten 3-1.
