Trivia
-
- In 1970, Celtic drew 3-3 with Benfica over two legs in the European Cup. Celtic went through on a coin toss!
- Celtic Chairman Robert Kelly made a complaint to UEFA about the practice of coin tosses settling ties, and the system in European club competition was changed soon after to penalty kicks. Kelly claims Celtic would not have complained if they had lost the toss.
- The above wasn’t the only reason penalty kicks were introduced but did add further reasoning for its introduction. You can argue both ways whether it has benefitted Celtic or not.
